How do I choose the right type of bearing?

Bearings are used to reduce friction between moving parts. They are used in a variety of applications such as industrial machinery, vehicles, aviation and medical equipment. Choosing the right type of bearing is essential for the proper operation of the machine, it is important to know what size, load, material and seal of the bearing, among other things, should be.

To know which type of bearing is suitable for your application you must first find out what available space there is, this is very important for the size of the bearing. In addition, the load is essential, excessive load can shorten the life of a bearing. Thus, speed, skew and rigidity are also important.

There are several types of bearings, the most common are;

Ball bearings: Ball bearings are the most commonly used type of bearing. They consist of rolling balls that reduce friction between moving parts. Ball bearings can also be further divided into different models, usually radial or axial bearings are used.

Slide bearings: these bearings have a smooth surface (usually a bushing or sleeve) to reduce friction between moving parts, oil or graphite is used as a lubricant for this purpose. They are shaped like a cylinder and have no moving parts.

Needle roller bearings: Needle roller bearings are mainly used in applications where space is limited and high load carrying capacity is required, especially in applications with radial loads. Because the needles are thin and long are, needle roller bearings have higher surface contact compared to ball bearings, which makes them suitable for applications with higher radial loads.

Cylinder bearings: A cylindrical roller bearing, also called a rolling or roller bearing, is a type of bearing that consists of rolling elements that roll between the inner and outer rings of the bearing. These bearings are designed to support radial loads (forces perpendicular to the shaft) and axial loads (forces in the direction of the shaft).

Tapered roller bearings: These bearings have both radial and axial load carrying capacity. They are often used in applications where large axial forces are transmitted, such as in gears and gearboxes.
