What does a compressor system consist of?
The compressor is the heart of a compressed air system. But a compressor alone isn’t enough. To ensure reliable, dry, and clean compressed air, you need various components. Furthermore, the design of the system affects energy consumption and performance.
A compressor system typically consists of:
Compressor- The compressor draws in ambient air and brings it up to the desired pressure. The type of compressor you need depends, among other things, on the required volume of compressed air, the working pressure, and the usage profile.
Compressed Air Receiver - A compressed air receiver provides buffering for the compressed air produced. This allows you to accommodate peaks in compressed air demand and prevents the compressor from having to respond immediately to every minor change. The larger the receiver, the better the control.
Compressed Air Filters- Incoming ambient air always contains contaminants. Compressed air filters help remove, for example, solid particles and oil aerosols from the compressed air. The type of filtration required is determined by the desired compressed air quality and the application.
Compressed Air Dryer- When air is compressed and cooled, water vapor is produced. A compressed air dryer removes condensate from the compressed air, thereby helping to prevent problems such as corrosion. Depending on the desired pressure dew point, arefrigerated dryeror an adsorption dryer, for example, can be used.
Compressed Air Piping- Compressed air is delivered to the various consumers through the piping network. A properly sized compressed air piping network minimizes pressure loss and contributes to an efficient system. Selecting the correct pipe diameter is crucial in this regard.

In addition to the main components, there are a number of other issues that deserve attention.
Compressor Room - A compressor generates heat during operation. The room housing the system must therefore be adequately ventilated. Accessibility for inspection and maintenance is also important.
Condensate Drainage - Condensate is produced during the generation and treatment of compressed air. It must be drained at various points in the system. With the right condensate drains and condensate treatment, you can prevent unnecessary compressed air loss and ensure proper drainage.
Oil-Water Separator- The condensate from an oil-lubricated compressor may contain oil as well as water. This condensate should therefore not simply be discharged. An oil-water separator separates the oil from the condensate. The treated water can then be properly discharged. The separated oil is collected and disposed of separately.
Maintenance - Regular maintenance helps ensure that the compressor system operates reliably and efficiently. This includes replacing filters, oil, and other wear parts in a timely manner and inspecting the various components.
Energy Consumption - Producing compressed air consumes a relatively large amount of energy. A compressor that is not properly matched to the actual demand can therefore result in unnecessary costs. It is therefore advisable to consider not only the purchase of the compressor, but also the efficiency of the entire compressed air system.
Monitoring - By measuring the pressure, consumption, and performance of the system, you gain insight into how the compressed air system operates. This allows you, for example, to detect pressure loss, leaks, and unusual energy consumption earlier.
What kind of compressor system do you need?
That varies by company. The required capacity, workload, and compressed air quality depend on the machines and processes for which you use compressed air. The piping network, available space, and potential future expansion also play a role.
A good compressor system therefore does not start with choosing a single compressor, but with assessing the total compressed air demand.
