The connector, perhaps the most critical component of clamp ring couplings, is highly technological and requires considerable design, metallurgy and manufacturing expertise to function properly. Not all products on the market meet these stringent requirements. The joint must deform elastically and plastically precisely during coupling assembly for proper pipe grip and sealing. The leading edge must be harder than the pipes for a grip and seal that also seals surface scratches and defects. However, if the entire joint is too hard, it may not deform properly. Therefore, only the grip edge of the joint is hardened while the rest has other tightly controlled mechanical properties. Moreover, the hardening process must not affect the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel. Finally, manufacturing processes must consistently produce defect-free connectors within very tight tolerances that meet metallurgical specifications.
